HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Audemars Piguet watches are quite hard to date. They are sold in vanishing small numbers, rarely need to advertise, and the journalists will prefer to cover watches like the Jule Audemars minute repeating chronograph with tourbillon (15 made, £227,725 back in 1999). In the year 2000 the logo changed to this, slightly bolder look with larger A and P, so this watch has to post date that. Comparing the model reference numbers on other AP ranges, we think this was made circa 2001.
CONDITION
Along with Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet are considered one of the big three Swiss high end watchmakers. They named this range after one of the founding fathers of the brand, Jules Audemars, so wanted it to be good. So this watch has a manual wind movement, cased in 18k white gold, with a diamond encrusted bezel, yet is still slim enough to be called an ultra thin watch (anything 5mm or less thick is considered ultrathin). The movement, in house naturally, is their 20 jewel calibre 2080 which is both beautifully finished and was adjusted to five positions and temperatures. The diamond bezel is subtle enough not to be flash, but naturally it is an attractive addition, especially in natural light. It is difficult to fault the condition on the watch in any way, save for the tip of the minute hand isn’t quite as blue as the rest of the hand. AP no longer carry the Jules Audemars range, and only offer their code 11.59 and Royal Oak models now. The leather strap is very lightly used but from Audemars Piguet, as is the 18k white gold buckle. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, buckle and strap.
