HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
In 1986 TAG Heuer launched their first new model since the TAG takeover, and the F1 was a huge success. In 1987 the steel body like found on this example was added, as were more colours to the first six. This watch has the later ETA 955.414 movement, which has a date stamp for 1991, and the earliest we find this watch is in the 1992 catalogue (although catalogues do not feature every model). So circa 1991 is going to be pretty accurate.
CONDITION
The F1 was a very successful watch, but it does have some issues to watch for when buying a used example. The fibreglass cases can get damaged, but this has a steel case so that doesn’t apply here. The other two things to look for are badly worn bezels, and split or missing rubber straps. Again this watch has no issues, with the orange bezel in very good order for an F1 and the strap is hardly worn, although it is a little faded from Orange to more of a pink. We do have at time of press a new old stock black F1 strap that is available separately if this is something you would prefer. The movement is all working perfectly, including the quick set date. The glass is perfect, but that steel case does have a ding near nine. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
