The West End Watch Co. Sowar watch was a favourite model, designed to cope with the harsh conditions in India.  Model reference 4254.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

The Sowar is a long running model without too clear production dates, which makes it difficult to date with clarity.  However the watch we have here features an automatic movement first launched in 1975, so it can not be older that that year.

CONDITION

West End Watches are a Swiss brand founded in 1886, and predominantly focused on the Indian market.  Before long they provided most of the watches to the Indian Railway, and in the first World War the British Indian Army had West End Watches – both operations where timing is critical to life.  It was in 1917 the name Sowar, which translates to the cavalryman, was registered.  This one has a 17 jewel automatic ETA movement, calibre 2878, with both quick set day and date.  The movement has been protected by a dust cover – which are often lost but this one remains.  The cathedral hands have lost their lume over the years, but the red second hand is original.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.  The watch is signed on the dial, case, and movement.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.

Please see the HD video for more detail.  All photos and videos are part of the description and are of the actual watch unless mentioned.  We do not photoshop any pictures, and the images are copyright of birthyearwatches.com and should not be used without permission.
