A Sicura Marine Star divers watch, originally rated to 600ft, with some great design details.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Sicura didn’t register the name Marine Star, so we don’t have too much information on this model. However we do know that the movement was in use circa 1975, so we have concurred with that estimate.
EDIT: This article on Hodinkee about dive brands you need to know about has an advert, reporting to be from 1976, featuring the model. It isn’t definitive but it certainly supports our circa 1975 estimate.
CONDITION
This watch falls somehwere between a ‘skin diver’ (often rated to 50m, and diver in looks only) and a full on divers watch. Although originally rated to 600ft, the lack of a screw down crown, a lume pip on the seconds hand and a unidirectional bezel would prevent this from being a ‘real’ divers watch. But what we have is a very good looking piece. The hour hand is a shape we have never seen before, and this is odd as it looks so good. The gradient blue dial is another thing that looks fabulous, especially with the black day and date wheel. The colour the lume material has faded to is also great. We are less keen on the chrome plated case, which has taken many knocks over the years and has multiple marks, but the watch is priced to reflect this. The octagonal bezel doesn’t have any click (it wasn’t designed to) and it rotates freely in both directions, and while the bezel is marked like the case the bezel insert is still pretty good. The acrylic crystal has a few marks, including a slight crack in the underside near 2 that you can only see in some lights. The movement is a Sicura branded Ronda 1238, which is a 17 jewel automatic with quick set date (set by turning the crown backwards) and is a Swiss lever movement as opposed to the cheaper pin pallet movements Sicura often used in this period. We have added a modern quality rubber strap to complete the look.
