HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Up until 1967 we have a table of serial numbers for Universal Geneve. The serial number on this case back is much higher than this table gives us, so we can presume it is a few years past this date.
CONDITION
The condition of this watch is fantastic. Most collectors with know Universal Geneve from the Polerouter and Tri Compax chronographs, but the shadow range should not be overlooked. The fashion at the time in quality watches was to make them as thin as possible, and in 1966 the Golden Shadow was the thinnest automatic watch in the world. It was Universal Geneve that patented the microrotor that allows their movements to be so slender back in 1955, and they really were competing with Piaget and Vacheron Constantin for sales in this exclusive market segment. This particular example is a little fatter, but most of that is the curved acrylic crystal accounting for the extra thickness – it still wears like a very thin watch should. The dial is a rich, deep blue and faultless. The white hands provide excellent contrast to the dial, making the watch easy to read. The microrotor movement is the Universal Geneve calibre 1-66, a 25 jewel treat to use and see. The case only has the lightest of surfaces scratches, and we can confidently say you will struggle to find a better example anywhere. The blue leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
