As if a solid 18k gold Longines Flagship wasn’t enough, this one has a sigma σ patterned dial and the original strap and buckle.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The use of the sigma symbol on the dial, the 52,***,*** serial number and movement production dates all suggest this was made circa 1973.
CONDITION
As the price of gold shot up in value, a group of high end Swiss watch manufacturers started to us the sigma σ letter at the foot of the dial to show that the hands and markers were made of the highest quality materials. It was an attempt to prove that no corners were being cut, and you can read more about sigma dials here. The dial itself is quite special in the design, with scooped or carved patterned bouncing the light around in a very nice way. The case is solid 18k, with screw down case back, and is the C shape (named after the Flagship chief rival, the Omega Constellation). The case is in very good shape and difficult to fault. The movement fitted is Longines 6641, a 25 jewel automatic which was adjusted to four positions and runs at 28.8kbph. It can also be handwound via the signed crown. The alligator leather strap is used and can not be exported outside of the UK due to CITES rules, but if this watch is exported we will fit a standard cow leather strap and transfer the Longines signed gold plated buckle. Gold plated buckles are not uncommon on heavier gold watches like this Flagship, as it stronger on this key component than softer 18k gold.
