This is the second Ingersoll SeaLion we have been lucky enough to find, and we are very pleased to be able to offer another after the first sold immediately.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There is very little information about this watch available, but judging by the movement and the styling we think this watch was made circa 1972. If you have any more information then please do contact us.
CONDITION
The movement is a manual wind Ronda 1215-21, running at 21,600 bph, and we haven’t split the case to show the movement this time as we did not want to damage the case when the movement is keeping good time. The case is made from fibreglass, and the movement would come out of the front once you remove the glass. The benefit of this design is it is easier to keep the case watertight (hence the name Sealion printed in relief on the case back), and it also prevents people from ‘popping the back off to have a look’. But the movement wasn’t why you have read this far – it is the dial colour and design.
The dial is in fantastic condition and the deep dished dial is set off by chunky hour markers and a steel bezel (possibly stainless – we can’t say for sure). The white second hand is also a nice touch, and very typical of the period. The colour of the dial is reminiscent of a Seiko Pogue if you have been lucky enough to see or own a good one of those. The strap is the original white (slightly yellowed with age) plastic to match the case back, but you could request a different colour strap if you preferred. We would suggest keeping the white one though, as you can only be original once. The brand name SeaLion has been registered by both Mido in Switzerland and Seiko in Japan, so we’re not sure how Ingersoll got away with calling their watch this!
