The Heuer Carrera was launched in 1964, and quickly became a design classic. This is the 2nd generation, model reference 73653N.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The generation 2 Carrera were available in some guises between 1969 and 1978, including for a few years overlapping the generation 3 watches (they have hidden lugs, so are easy to spot. Most were the two register chronographs, but we have found this model in a 1972 catalogue. The picture is the silver dial version (73653) , and then underneath in German is the description “as above, but with a deep blue dial: 73653N”
CONDITION
Most Carrera watches have the two registers, and in the Generation 2 are often automatic. However this is a long player, three register manual wind version. The movement is signed Heuer Leonidas SA, and is a Valjoux 7736. This is a 17 jewel movement with cam switched chronograph, which is all working well. The stainless steel case is known as a C style, after the Omega Constellation, and has smooth lines and thick, strong lugs. It is not in bad condition at all, but there is a ding on the underside of the case near the bottom pusher. The dial has slight feathering at the edge of the chrono subdials, but it is difficult to see. The tachymetre inner bezel is slightly grubby, and unusual in having the word TACHY at three o’clock rather than one o’clock like most watches. You can see from the catalogue extract that the gold watch shown has the same set up, so we know this is correct for the period. The leather strap is new, and selected to be a close match to what was supplied originally. It could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
