HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was in production for a long time, between 1954 to 1974ish, and Oriosa were founded in 1927. But looking at the styling and comparing it to other, better documented brands we can say this watch was made circa 1970.
CONDITION
The movement inside this watch is the well proven AS1475, which is manually wound via the crown at 4. The crown at two sets the pleasantly subtle alarm hand when pulled out, and also winds the alarm barrel spring – if the alarm didn’t have its own spring the watch would stop once the power hungry alarm rang. You also get a calendar, but it does not have any quick set functionality so can be a little annoying to set (an awful lot of collectors who rotate their collection never set the date!). The styling is nice, with the orange seconds hand so typical of the late sixties and early seventies, and the slate grey tritium dial being in good condition. The white hour and minute hands provide good contrast and legibility. The chromed case has some marks, but isn’t showing too much wear – you can still see the sunburst brushing on the bezel for example. There is also a screw down case back cover, designed to increase the volume of the alarm that can be heard. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.
