A nice clean LIP Navyking automatic vintage watch with a larger than average case size, all in stainless steel. This Navyking has a lot going for it.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The date quoted by Dr Ranfft as an example for this movement is 1965. Plus we found another LIP Navyking that sold at auction for €220 plus fees that also quoted c1965. We have no evidence to doubt this watch was made circa 1965.
CONDITION
The watch is very stylish and clean, as you can see in the photos. Inside the stainless steel case is an ETA 2472 movement (rebranded on the oscillating weight LIP R.182) which is all working well, and has a semi quickset date that works by turning the hands from 24:00-20:30-24:00. This is working perfectly. The screw down case back has done a good job of protecting the watch and dial from the elements. The bracelet is long and has been ultrasonically cleaned, and was made in France. France was one of the major markets for LIP, as their main factory was in Besançon but this one is stamped Swiss made. Lip have an interesting history, founded in 1867 they were the first to use radium on the dials, they claim to have launched the first electric watch in 1952 (although as it wasn’t available to buy until 1958 we don’t think it really counts). Some of their best loved watches are the electronic Naudic-Ski and the Mach 2000 by Roger Tallon that is sometimes called the lipstick. The brand self destructed in the 1970’s, as industrial disputes crippled the factory and even lead to hostage taking at one point! However the brand is now revived.
