This square cased Waltham watch comes with box and guarantee papers.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the lack of a serial number, and Swiss Made on the dial, we can date this watch to being made circa 1959. American made Walthams always have a serial number, and the Swiss subsidiary was founded in 1954. The AS1802 movement is a little later, so c1959 is an estimate.
CONDITION
The watch is in good order. The chromed case has just a bit of wear on the corners, which are always vulnerable to knocks, but the machines pattern on the bezel is still clean. The dial is very good, and we have polished the acrylic crystal to best show this. The second hand still has the red arrow on the end. The crown is signed with a W. The case has a screw down case back, which helps protect against the elements and might explain why the dial is so good. The box shouts about the centennial year from Waltham, 1950, so this might be a either a matched box or left over stock that continued to be used – if you know more on this subject then please do contact us. The box is made in the USA and the watch is Swiss made. We have fitted a new leather strap, but we will include the Airflex expanding bracelet that might have been original to the watch – again this is Made in the USA, but fitted to a Swiss made watch. Square watches always wear a little larger than the dimension suggest – please see this HODINKEE article to explain the maths behind this.
This watch will be supplied with the Waltham presentation box, unstamped guarantee and our Certificate of Authenticity.
