HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
According to ‘The Movado History’ book, the movement here was only used between 1958 and 1960, so we have picked a mid point year as the likely year of manufacture.
CONDITION
The Sub Sea case was made by François Borgel, as indicated by the FB and Key logo inside the case back. This is a good thing – Borgel cases can be found in IWC, Patek Philippe, Longines and Rolex vintage watches, so we are in good company. And at 40 microns thick, it is no surprise that it has stood up well – the gold plating is wearing on the very tips of the bombe lugs, which is easy to see on enlarged photos but not in real life on the wrist. The case back is correct for the model too – both the case back and the case are stamped 2048 so there can be no confusion. The movement inside is a chronometer rated, 28 jewel in house automatic Movado calibre 536. This can be hand wound via the oversized crown, or it will wind automatically via the jeweled bearing oscillating weight. The date uses the semi quick set method (midnight – 9- midnight, shown in the video). The dial is very clean, and the date magnifier on the crystal is on the inside of the acrylic. The strap is new.
There doesn’t seem to be that many of these about. Hodinkee had a steel one which they sold for $1,900 (advert here)
