This Wittnauer men’s watch has a very impressive dial that bounces the light around. Model reference 2444-11WS.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There is no serial number database for Wittnauer watches as far as we are aware, and being a steel case there will be no hallmarks. The movement design used in this watch was first launch in 1955, so we know the watch can not be later than that, but it could be newer.
CONDITION
This Wittnauer has an outstanding dial, deeply textured and with art deco style numerals applied to the even numbers. The dial is also in fabulous condition, which some of the photos show and others don’t – the video is probably a better representation of the dial condition. The movement is the 17 jewel manual wind Wittnauer calibre 11WSG, which is based on an AS1539. It is installed in a monobloc case, where to access the movement you need to take it out via the glass – the back doesn’t clip or screw off. The crown also needs to be removed to access the movement, and it uses what is known as a split stem system – so if you pull the crown out too hard it will split at the knuckle. The movement is working well. The case has a few marks, as it has not been polished, but nothing really significant. The correct tension ring crystal is installed – this and the monobloc case is probably been what has kept the dial looking so clean. The strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
