HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production dates of the movement we can suggest this watch was made circa 1950. This also fits the styling and size of the case.
CONDITION
No one is claiming this is cosmetically perfect. The chromed case has numerous marks, and the crown has lose most of its plating too. But the dial is good for a watch of this age, and we have replaced the crystal and the leather strap is new, so the appearance is lifted by these. The movement inside this watch is an ETA 984, a solid 15 jewel manual wind movement that is easy to service. The watch is running well. The lume has fallen out of the blued minute hand, but it wouldn’t have been luminous now anyway. The caseback is stainless steel and the lugs are drilled to allow for easier strap changes. While the case size is small by today’s standards we have had people buy watches like this Avia to see if vintage watches are for them, before spending thousands on a more prestigious brand – but most people will enjoy it for what it is.
