This Bulova President was one of their more expensive watches, retailing at $55 in 1941. Gold filled case.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was made between 1936 and 1944, and the President range in this case was launched in 1940 (see advert). The dating code is not visible on the movement, and may be on the dial side, but we will not be far out at circa 1941.
CONDITION
$55 doesn’t sound a lot of money, but it is the equivalent of around £1,000 today. In 1941 Bulova ran the world’s first television commercial, and the 10 second long slot cost $9! The President range had five versions, A,B,D, E and F. We can not find anything on C, but the case on this watch looks to have been used on D and F variants, both of which had slightly different dials. We think the dial on this example has had a older restoration, painting it black, so we can not completely identify if this is model D, F of possibly the missing C model! The tank style case is 10k gold filled, and has the 21 jewel movement fitted – most Bulova watches of this time were gold plated and had 15 or 17 jewel movements. This calibre 7AP manual wind movement is a modified ETA 735 and is working well. The gold filled case does have some wear at the high points, which is normal, and it closes together nicely. The case size was in fashion in the 40’s, and would have been in the 1980’s too for men, but may be small for some men today. The leather strap is new.
