HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in January 1991 ready for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where Seiko were the official timing partners.
CONDITION
This is a complex watch, with a combination of 8 hands, three pushers and two crowns, yet all the information is displayed quite easily. We are grateful though to have found the instruction book online here. This complexity came at a some cost too – a similar looking watch in the 1991 catalogue under the Business Timing section cost 500,000 – that was nearly £2,000 back then and was the second most expensive Seiko available, more expensive than all but one Grand Seiko (and that had an 18k bracelet too!). This Olympic branded watch is gold plated, which makes a large difference to the price of course. The plating is in good condition but will show some wear on the high spots and lugs. The fixed time zone bezel hasn’t lost any paint in the place names, but two things stand out with the bezel. The first is London is at 12, so the watch was probably destined for the UK market when new – the Japanese brochure has Tokyo at 12. This is not unusual, but what is is that Los Angeles is not spelt correctly on our watch – It says Los Angels. Seiko made a world time watch in 1968 with what is now known as the error bezel, bunching London with Paris, and they are highly collectible now. The glass has a few small marks, but the dial and hands are all very good. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner, as well as set it up for their time zone.
