HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1983.
CONDITION
In the early eighties people wanted their watches to be thin, rectangular, gold plated and quartz powered. This Omega ticks every box. Until quartz watches came along and got the movements small enough, ultrathin (under 5mm thick) watches were the preserve of the very wealthy, as you had to be looking at brands like Audemars Piguet or Piaget to obtain a mechanical watch that met this criteria. Quartz made it easier, therefore cheaper, to get an ultra thin watch. It was still difficult – especially as this Omega De Ville also has a centrally mounted seconds hand which adds height to the movement – but consumers had obtainable ultrathin watches for the first time. The size is was considered a men’s watch back in 1983, but now would be unisex – if it were a ladies watch the Omega reference number would start with a 5 and not a 1. The 20 micron gold plated case is all in great shape, as is the dial and crystal. The movement is the Omega 1417, one of the last Omega developed quartz movements before they switched to using ETA movements. It has seven jewels and metal bridges with Côtes de Genève striped decoration. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown and buckle.
