This Seiko Sports 100 LCD watch was one of the watches to own in 1981, and is absolutely representative of the time. Model reference A628-5050
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in June 1981.
CONDITION
This is a wearable example in good cosmetic condition, but does have a few faults so let’s deal with them first. Two of the three known faults are typical of LCD watches – the light does light and the beep for functions and the alarm no longer beeps. The third is the bracelet has been swapped for a non Seiko item, but had the Seiko clasp fitted. All of these are easy to live with, but if you want a perfect example then this is not the watch for you. However, on the bright side the LCD screen has no bleeding, the pushers work, we have a PDF of the manual that can be seen online here, and the paint around the SEIKO and SPORTS 100 is far better than usual. Seiko were the first to produce both a quartz watch (1969), and a solar powered watch (1978), so they knew what they were pioneering. This A628-5050 is sold with the known faults, but is priced accordingly in this fast rising market for LCD watches.
