HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in August 1977. Although the looks and Playboy association might look like an 1980’s watch, we have found the same watch in the 1976 Seiko catalogue.
CONDITION
While the marketing on this watch probably wouldn’t get commissioned today, the watch itself speaks of the times in which it was made. Quartz watches had only been around for about 7 years, introduced by Seiko in 1969, and they had proved popular. And it wasn’t because they were cheap – this Playboy watch with just two hands was about twice the price of a Seiko 6139 automatic chronograph watch in the same year. But they were accurate, reliable and easy to own, and Seiko lead the way. The calibre 43A on this watch even has a trimmer, which is used in quartz watches to adjust their performance to yet still improve it. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The dial is clean, with no recognisable Seiko branding save for a tiny logo at 6 for the Diani factory. The crown has a black stone set into it, just like the ones in the original brochure, so is likely to be original. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.
