A very attractive men’s vintage Tudor Prince Oysterdate with blue dial and bezel, signed on caseback, crown and clasp by Rolex.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1973. We have also found a Japanese catalogue for 1974 showing this model in the pricelist was 72,000 yen – more than the Submariner model. A Submariner model would now be worth more than double this Prince Oysterdate.
CONDITION
This watch is a winner on many fronts. At a time when quartz was king, and the race was for smaller, thinner cases this is full on divers watch with dimensions to suit. That appeals to modern tastes. It is also quite a rare watch – they were not a fashionable watch back in 1978, so not so many sold. As time of writing there were 182 Prince Oysterdate watches on Chrono24, and only three were the 9121/0 model. Then there is also condition – this one is as good as you would hope to find. Some small scratches on the original bracelet, some tiny marks on the bidirectional bezel (that doesn’t click – this is not a serious divers watch) near 40, and a dent to the case near nine, but otherwise it really is good for a 40+ year old watch. Then there is the dual branding. Back then Tudor watches were not even sold in all markets, never mind being a completely separate brand that they try to be today. So you see the Rolex crown on the screwdown crown, and on the clasp and the CASE BY ROLEX on the case back. Inside the case you have the ETA 2784 movement, which while it might not have the swagger of an in house movement it is also easy, and cheap, to service when compared to any in-house movement. The bracelet is long, which is important when picking any watch with an integrated bracelet.
