HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in April 1970. The receipt does not quote the serial number but does say it is a gent’s steel Seiko automatic with bracelet (as it would have originally had), but shows it was sold in December 1970. The guarantee booklet doesn’t have a date, but is stamped with the same retailer as the receipt and quotes the serial number – there is no doubt these items all belong together.
CONDITION
Having details such as the retailer (Arthur Kay & Co. of Manchester) and the price (£18 is the rough equivalent of £350 today) adds appeal to collectors, as it is rare for these to survive 50+ years. The watch is in good condition, with the unpolished case having a few marks if looking closely. The dial and hands are good, with just slight staining near two which is not immediately obvious. Inside the all stainless steel case can be found the Seiko 7005A calibre, a 17 jewel automatic that can not be hand wound hence the flush fitting crown. It also has quick set calendar, which is all working correctly. The watch would have had a bracelet when new but that has been lost over the years. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred – in the video we use a different strap than in the photos to show how versatile the colour combination can be.
