The 56GS were the first Grand Seiko models to have the slim Automatic movements. Model reference 5646-7010.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in November 1970. The 56GS models were introduced in 1970.
CONDITION
The Grand Seiko model range was first introduced in 1960, so a decade on they knew what their customer wanted. Not much later the Grad Seiko name was lost from the catalogues, substituted for the Grand Quartz and didn’t really return until 1993. The earlier watches are well sought after now of course, reknowned for their quality of design and construction.
This example is not perfect but is priced accordingly. The dial is original, but has a small mark near 5 on the very edge. Their is also some very feint marks around the hour markers. The case is better – capped in gold and with the gold inlay on the case back still in place. You also have the signed crown, with the GS logo – both inlay and crown can be lost over the years. The Seiko 5645A automatic movement has 25 jewels, and quick set for both day and date. The day can be set to Kanji or English, as shown in the video. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. After the video was recorded we noticed the strap had some damage, so we picked a different style for the photos. There were eighteen different 56GS models in total.
