An automatic with day and date, this Citizen Crystal Seven was a natural rival for the Seiko 5 range both in 1968 and now. Model reference AC55 2806-Y.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in March 1968.
CONDITION
The Seiko 5 is a phenomenally successful watch range, so it is natural that Citizen would make something to compete with their national rivals. The big advantage that the Citizen Crystal Seven has over the Seiko is that it can be hand wound too, whereas the Seiko was automatic only. The crown on this watch is signed with a C, but we might expect it to say CITZ so it might be a replacement (or a crown we haven’t seen before from Citizen). The dial is a nice black and original – a lot of black dials are later redials, but this has the original silver text and the small lume ploys on the hour markers are nicely faded. Behind the screw down case back, sitting inside the squared off stainless steel case, lies the automatic movement. Citizen chose their 21 jewel calibre 5204, which also has quick set date. The day wheel is in English, and is at 12 on the dial. The bracelet is a later replacement, not made by Citizen. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath, but could be swapped for a leather strap if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, crystal, clasp, buckle and strap.
