In a DS&S 9k gold case, this Longines manual wind men’s presentation watch appears to have had an easy life. Model reference 39864.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the London hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this to being assayed in 1965. But the serial number on the movement dates the watch to 1967, and the two parts could not have been paired until 1967.
CONDITION
In case you are wondering about the different production dates of the case and the movement, please allow us to explain. The import duty on complete solid gold watches used to be very punitive, so many Swiss companies would work with British case makers like Dennison, BWC and in this example DS&S. Longines would have shipped the dial and movement to their UK importer, Baume, and then the two components would be completed in the UK, thus legally avoiding import duty. Many companies did this as, and it is nice that Baume have their mark stamped in the case back too. The case has a nice presentation engraving from Tamplin’s Brewery for 45 years service. Tamplin’s were Brighton’s largest brewer. The movement is Longines hand wound calibre 370, with seventeen jewels and sub seconds dial. The dial is clean, but does have a small scratch near the sub seconds dial and in some angles you can see a slight dent in the same place. The crown is signed Longines and looks period correct. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
