The Turn-o-Graph is somewhat a forgotten classic of the Rolex Datejust range. Model reference 1625.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom two lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1965. This is further reinforced but the production date stamped on the inside of the case back, also for 1965.
CONDITION
The Turn-o-Graph holds a few important firsts for Rolex. It was the first production Rolex to have a rotating bezel. It was the first sports Rolex to have a bi metal case. It was issued to the Military, namely the Thunderbird USAF aerobics flight team where it gained the Thunderbird nickname (prompted by Rolex’s marketing department). But it never sold as well as the standard Datejust, and was dropped from the range, having a resurgence in the 2000’s before being dropped again.
In essence the Turn-o-Graph is a standard Rolex Datejust with a rotating bezel, and this is no bad thing. This model has what we believe to be a 14k gold bezel rather than 18k, and this is in good order with no dings. These rotate but do not click like a Submariner would. The stainless steel case is also good, with the drilled lugs that the later watches lost. The screw down crown is signed and works perfectly. The dial is original and does have light spotting when up close. The Alpha shaped hands are good. The movement is the Rolex caliber 1570, which is working well and the calendar is turning at midnight. These were chronometer rated when new, so a great sign of quality. The leather band is new, and the stainless steel signed buckle has been transferred to the new strap.
