Most Gruen Curvex watches were 10k rolled gold, but this is the top of the range solid 14k gold model.  Reference 370-625

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the model number on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1949.  We have also found a similar watch in the Gruen catalogue book listed for 1949.

CONDITION

Gruen celebrated their 75th year in 1949, and the watch they are most commonly known for is the Curvex.  Launched in 1935, the movement is designed to be curved to allow the case to fit the wrist better.  This was copied by many brands subsequently, but it is a Curvex original design.

Like most American firms, Gruen used mainly 10k rolled gold cases.  The American manufacturers perfected rolled gold, and given the cost savings then it is no wonder than they all sold far fewer solid gold watches than the the rolled gold watches that looked pretty identical.  Happily, this is one the 14k solid gold cases, with nicely flaired and decorated lugs too.  Inside is the calibre 370 movement that is working well.  The dial is very clean for a watch of this age, but does not appear to be a redial.  The size is typical for a men’s watch of the time, but is small compared to modern watches – think Cary Grant rather than Arnold Schwarzenegger.
