HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1948.
CONDITION
Railway watches were very important. High ranking members of staff relied on these very accurate timepieces to keep the railways running on time, and so critical was the performance that these watches have a lever set operation to set the hands, eliminating the accidental adjustment. To set the hands you unscrew the front of the watch, slide out the lever near 11 and then turn the crown. You can see this in the video.
We have never seen a watch designed to be adjusted to 7 positions before. The movement is clean and running well. The 10k rolled gold case, guaranteed for 20 years, shows no real wear. The dial has very clear minute markers and bold Arabic hour markers, again designed for the purpose of maximum accuracy (this time from the Human reading the watch!). These were working watches, so wear on the rolled gold cases is not uncommon, and because the front is designed to be unscrewed some dial are dirty, but not this one. There is a small smudge on 12 where it was printed. There is a patterned design around the front bezel and the case back to help grip when unscrewing , and this is continued with the bow. The single Albert chain is also rolled gold, and is new.
