A stainless steel 35mm case and great dial, this 1946 Breitling has everything going for it. Reference 7174.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1946. We also have a low resolution picture from the 1946 catalogue that shows very similar models, and hopefully we can get better quality images of this catalogue soon.
CONDITION
This watch is in great condition. The dial is so good that we suspect it has been repainted, but on close inspection we can find no evidence this has been done – if it has been repainted then it has been done very, very well, and we have taken photographs without the crystal to show the quality. The blued hands are quite distinct – again, these could be a later replacement but we do not have enough evidence to compare against period correct advertising to say for certain. The all stainless steel case has claw lugs, just like those shown in the 1946 catalogue, and is stamped on the case back with model number, serial number and the Breitling logo. Inside you find the 17 jewel movement, again stamped Breitling on the bridge, and this unit is based on the ETA 1261, but upgraded to add chantons to the geartrain jewels. This movement is period correct in not having shock protection. The strap is very lightly used, and could be swapped for a different colour or style if preferred.
