A very original Roamer Rockshell Mark 1 automatic in great condition and running nicely.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Mark 2 Rockshell was launched in 1971, but we are unclear if both watches were made at the same time. The in house MST 471 movement was made between 1965 and 1973, and the styling is typical for 1970, so given the evidence we have opted for circa 1970. CONDITION
A watch can only be original once, and this one is very original. The recessed crown is signed with the Roamer r, as is the crystal in the centre (only visible if you really look for it). The bracelet is also signed on the clasp for both Roamer and the Rockshell sub brand. Both case and bracelet are in 20 micron gold plating, and this is standing up to time very well indeed. The triple gold look is quite bold (gold dial, case and brand) but this isn’t a subtle watch anyway due to the size. The strap has been shortened a little, but extenders like these can be had if needed. The way the case is designed the movement fits into a sealed capsule, which then fits inside the case. This keeps everything watertight, but we haven’t got a movement photo until we get it to our watchmaker to open it up. This clever system, developed by Roamer, has also helped keep the dial in great condition.
