First launched in 1953, the Zodiac Sea Wolf was one of the very first dive watches (alongside the Blancpain fifty fathoms and Rolex Submariner later that year).  The re issue modern watch has reignited much interest in the originals.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

This non date version with the 70-72 movement first came out in 1961, but the original hands didn’t have the central spine and the lume often fell out.  As the hands on this version have the spine it must be slightly later.

CONDITION

The movement was based on the manual wind calibre AS 1687/1688.  The automatic mechanism is a joint development of Doxa, Eberhard, Favre-Leuba, Girard-Perregaux, and Zodiac.  A full and excellent history of the Sea Wolf models can be found in this article.

Many people think these watches are chrome plated, but they are wrong.  The main body is stainless steel, and the bezel is plated brass – it is the slight wear that these show that lead people to think the case is plated.  The case back  on this example must have been swapped at one point, as it is stamped internally for the 722-916 model which had a date window.  Fit and external finish is exactly the same from the outside though.  The dial is superb, as are the hands and hour markers – the hands are the correct later ones, with a spine down the centre.  We have fitted a new NATO style strap.  The crown is the original.

This watch will be supplied with a presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
