A nice quality Vertex Revue ‘calatrava’ style watch, with stainless steel case and original presentation box.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Vertex were founded in London and Switzerland in 1916, and grew to become the exclusive importer of Movado watches in Great Britain. Vertex started working with Revue Thommen as early as 1931, but the dual branded watches only started in 1956. Given the movement in this one was quite early, and the lack of any official records that we can find to track the serial number, we believe this watch was made circa 1957.
Vertex also were one of the 12 suppliers for the ‘dirty dozen’ watches commissioned for the British Army in 1944, alongside companies such as IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Omega, Longines, Timor, Grana, Record, Buren, Cyma, Lemania and Eterna.
CONDITION
The in house Calibre 77 hand wound movement is not only working well, but is also a treat to see. This is the 17 jewel version with shock protection, and even has chantons surrounding some of the jewels – normally this is the sort of thing only found on really high end watches. The stainless steel case is in very good condition, and the leather strap is new. The dial is great, with just the slightest mark near the 12 baton. The crown is signed with the back to back R’s used by Revue Thommen. The hands have very slight marking, only really noticeable with a loupe. The watch is very slim, and despite the smaller dimensions compared to modern watches this does seem to wear larger than 34mm, possibly because the bezel is slim so the dial is larger.
