This Garrard gold watch was a presentation gift for long service, and still has all the original paperwork and original strap.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the engraving on the case back, along with the insurance valuation of £350 and the original Certificate of Guarantee, we can accurately date this watch to being given to R J Dow in August 1992.
CONDITION
Garrard are the crown jewellers. If you get a knighthood or win a medal at the Invictus games, Garrard made the medal. The tiara worn by Queen Elizabeth on her wedding day? Garrard made it. The engagement ring worn by Princess Diana, and now the Duchess of Cambridge, was made by Garrard. So we know their reputation for quality. This watch was unusual in that few companies were still giving gold watches for long service awards in the nineties, but Brooke Bond Foods still made the effort to reward 25 years good service. It is likely that this watch has spent the majority of its life in the original box and only worn for best, as it is still on the original garrard calf leather strap. We have changed the buckle, as the original was tarnished, but otherwise the watch is completely original. That includes the unsigned crown, which is showing wear but is perfectly functional. The dial is very clean, but the glass has a few slight nibbles at the edge. The size is now small for a men’s watch, but square watches do wear larger than round ones as they have a greater surface area. The movement is a ETA 7 jewel quartz, used by many companies like Zenith and Dunhill at the same period, and we will fit a new battery before sending this out. We can also fit a new leather strap if you prefer, keeping the original with the watch.
