This Mido Ocean Star Commander Datoday has nice curved lugs and the screw down case back rather than the monocoque design in the earlier watches.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Mido have been very helpful here. We provided them with the serial number of this watch, and they have confirmed it was made in 1984.
CONDITION
We do like this model of watch, and the previous two we have had have sold quickly. The details are all there – the machined indices, the hands with black lines either side of the Tritium lume for absolute clarity, the dial, with a brushed pattern from 6. But the 37 mm case in stainless steel is a great size for most people, and those curved lugs are a nice touch too. The automatic movement is an ETA 2836-1, branded for Mido, and this has quick set day and date. It is very stiff to wind via the signed crown, not helped by the crown being recessed, and this isn’t a problem as the watch starts with a quick shake. The day wheel shows both English and Roman Numerals, with both Sunday and VII shown in red script. The dial is very clean, and the strap is new (this could be swapped for a different style or colour if you prefer).
The Commander model continues in the modern Mido range (see here) and is remarkably close to the original.
