A larger than average ladies Glashutte watch, in great condition and complete with original box and papers.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the stamped supplied paperwork we can accurately date this watch to being produced in May 1974.
CONDITION
The watch is in fantastic condition, possibly never worn. As the paperwork is not filled out, but just stamped with the date of production, it is possible that this watch is New Old Stock (NOS), unsold and therefore unworn. The plastic hinge on the box isn’t even broken, and you could reasonably expect this to sustain some damage over the years.
There is a difference between watches like this, Original Glashutte, and the modern Swatch Group company Glashutte Original. Glashutte is a region in Germany near the Czech Republic border that is renown for its watchmaking. The other big company based there are A.Lange and Sohne. So highly thought of were the skills in this region that rules were put into place to show that the watch was actually from Glashutte – and this is where the Original part of the name originates. Following heavy bombing in 1945, and Germany’s defeat the whole region was absorbed by the German Democratic Republic, which is why this watch has made in the GDR on the dial. Following the fall of the Berlin wall the company restarted, and Swatch bought the business in 2000. Now the new Glashutte Original watches sell form many thousands, and the materials and finishing are very high end.
