A solid gold men’s Tissot automatic winding watch, in a uniblock case by DS&S.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1974, but it was engraved in 1977. Either year would be valid for a birth year watch.
CONDITION
Some people don’t like an engraving on a watch case back, even though they are buying a used watch. We do. Not only does it help with dating when the watch was gifted, but it also tells you a little more of the history. For example, this watch was presented in the same year that Wolverhampton Die Casting was sold to a competitor, as you can learn about on this website. The Tissot calibre 2481 was in production for 8 years between 1972 and 1980, and is a close relation to the Omega 1481. If it has one flaw, it is the quick set date mechanism that sometimes fails, often from lack of use. To change the date you push the crown inwards, once per date. On this watch it is working inconsistently – out of the case it worked fine, but it doesn’t quite turn over more often than not when the movement and case are all together. You can see in the video that the date does change sometimes, and it does change at midnight too as it should. The case on this watch was made by David Shackman and Sons (DS&S), a good sign of quality as they made cases for the best brands including Rolex. It is hallmarked for London 1969, so sat in stock for a number of years before being used. To access the movement you need to remove the crystal, which is a minor pain for a watchmaker but it does have the benefit of keeping unqualified people out of the movement whilst also providing good protection. The dial is clean, but the original crown is worn – most people prefer original and worn over shiny and non original so we have kept this original. This Tissot automatic is good value for a gold Swiss watch right now.
