This men’s Rolex Oysterdate has a manually wound movement and gloss black dial. Model reference 6694.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the case lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1966. The inside of the case back is also marked 1.66 for the same year, first quarter.
CONDITION
The reference 6694 can easily be confused with the Datejust, but there are noticeable differences. The movement is manually wound, not automatic for start, and it was never chronometer certified. The Oyster case is also about 1.3mm smaller, but the 19mm lugs remain on both models. It is also significantly cheaper than a Datejust. The 6694 started in the early Sixties and ran for over 20 years, so they proved popular.
This example has lost the bracelet over the years. That is not unusual, as Rolex bracelets from this period are not particularly robust. We have fitted anew black leather strap. The case has a few marks, as to be expected from a watch this age, but hasn’t been overpolished where the lugs become pointy. The dial is superb, a very deep gloss black and the golden hands and hour markers look excellent against it. The acrylic glass is good, with the correct 2.5x magnifier over the date, and the date wheel has open six and nines. The case back has a light engraving saying Lt. Mague F and possibly a G following that. The 17 jewel calibre 1225 movement is running beautifully.
