This men’s Longines was made in 1942 during World War 2 with the likely destination the US market, hence the 14k gold case.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement, which matches the one on the inside of the case back, we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1942.
CONDITION
While it may seem strange with modern eyes to be buying a gold Swiss watch in 1942, not long after the United States entered WW2, it certainly isn’t a unique situation. This watch we have sold previously was sold in London just after the Blitz had finished, from a shop in a street that had been bombed! Most 14k watches were designed for the USA, in the same way that most 9k watches were for the UK, as this was the popular standards of the time. The case is in good order, and has never been engraved, but the top edge of the crown has lost the plating. The dial has a centre section of copper finish, surrounded by a white bezel that appears to have been painted in at some stage, possibly to help legibility. It does have marks and patina, but it is also distinctive and catches the light nicely. Behind the dial you will find a Longines calibre 23M movement with sub seconds (the same designation also had centre seconds). This is a quality movement, fitted with 17 jewels, some of which are fitted into chantons to help the watch last even longer. That is a sign of top end watchmaking, and the fact that the movement is finished so nicely when the owner would likely never see it is classy. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. It is fitted with a non Longines deployant clasp, which can be switched for a standard buckle if preferred.
