The first Steeldive watch we have had, and it uses the Seiko NH35 automatic movement as well in this Willard homage.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
While the papers for this watch are not date stamped, the model was launched in 2021 so can not be older than this.
CONDITION
Firstly, in case you don’t know, what is a Willard? Martin Sheen played Captain Willard in the film Apocalypse Now, and his character wore a Seiko reference 6105-8110. The watches in that film were well researched, and many GI’s chose to buy the sturdy Seiko over the standard army issue watches. Original 6105-8110 Willard watches now fetch well over £1000, and Seiko have made a modern reissue too (again, these are not cheap at £1,200!). So micro brand Steeldive saw a gap and made a much more affordable homage of similar looks and dimensions. Like the original, the crown is at 4 and has healthy crown guards. The original has a bayonet crown, but neither the modern reissue or this Steeldive use a bayonet fixing, instead preferring a more conventional screw down crown. Steeldive have been a little cheeky too in the choice of movement – it is a Seiko NH35A – so as well as Seiko looks you get Seiko mechanics. The second hand, with the red and lumed pip, is very similar to the original. Like a lot of microbrands, details such as the signed crown and steel strapkeepers is nice to see. The solid caseback still has the protective sticker in place, and there is no damage to report anywhere. The glass has anti reflective coating, giving a blue tint to the black dial in some pictures. Overall this is a very solid feeling watch, and we have been impressed.
