This 36mm Tag Heuer Formula 1 watch is the closest modern version to the original Series 1 in size, but without the plastic bezel. Model reference WAC1212
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There is no definitive way of dating Tag Heuer watches to our knowledge, but the Series 3 was only available between 2004 and 2007, so we have picked a mid point year.
CONDITION
The original F1 was possibly Tag Heuer’s most important watch, with over 3 million sold. The downside was that the bezel was made of plastic, and this showed every mark. For the third series (they are currently on series 6) the bezel was titanium-carbide coated steel, so much more resilient to everyday wear. The bezel on this watch is perfect, having just been replaced. The case is made from 316L stainless steel, as is the bracelet, and features polyurethane inserts that act like bumper to further protect the case. On top was a sapphire crystal, again upgraded from the series 1 glass. The blue dial is quite striking and apparently has the wording TAG HEUER FORMULA 1 to distinguish between this and the motor racing series, who are quite protective of who can use their terminology. The triangular hands are good with strong lume still, and the quickset date at 4.30 works perfectly. This size was the Unisex model, but the polished bracelet will fit a large wrist.
