This Tudor Monarch is slimmer than the latest offerings, despite the chronograph function. Model reference 15900.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This example does not come with the papers, which would have made life easier. But from finding sold watches that did have paperwork with them the majority were from 2001. This is not the easiest watch to research, as Tudor Monarch brings up more on Henry VIII than watches, but that is in part thanks to the Rolex and Tudor founder, Hans Wilsdorf, who was an anglophile.
CONDITION
If you like the latest Tudor Black Bay models, but are concerned about the 14mm thickness, this is an excellent alternative. Tudor managed to make the Monarch chronograph around 10mm thick, thanks to the choice of using a high end mechaquartz movement. This is stamped Tudor calibre 1270, but it was developed by Frederick Piguet and also used in Cartier Pasha’s (then called calibre 053). The 22 jewel movement is nicely finished, and has the Côtes de Genève striping decoration normally reserved for watches with exhibition case backs. The chronograph is mechanical, so snaps back instantly, and the watch also has a quick set date operated by the screw down and signed crown. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The panda dial unusually has a date window at 12, which helps with symmetry. The bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The case and bracelet only show light surface scratches that could be removed if you wanted to get the watch polished, but we prefer to keep it as is.
