This Ebel Sportwave is the 40mm men’s full size version, and importantly has a long bracelet. Model reference E9251641.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Sportwave Chronograph was launched in 1994. While the papers we have for this watch are not dated, we have found very similar watches with papers from 1999, 2000 and 2001. The later 2001 watches have the word tachymeter on the bezel in red, so this must be an earlier one from circa 2000.
CONDITION
Ebel are a curious brand. They have been around since 1911, but they are more famed for their case and bracelet designs than any particular dial or movement. The Sportwave is a case in point. It was a development from the Ebel Wave that was launched in 1977, but naturally beefed up from the dress watches. This is an integrated bracelet design, so you can not swap the bracelet for a strap, and the most important thing with these is to get a long enough bracelet. This one is is large, with spare links, so should fit most wrists. Inside the stainless steel case is an Ebel badged movement, but in reality it is an ETA movement with an Ebel badge. This particular 27 jewel movement was used by a variety of makers, including Certina, Eterna, Rado and Tag Heuer, so it is in good company. You can set the hour hand separately, which is excellent if you frequently cross time zones, and by advance the hour hand alone you can also quick set the date. You have a chronograph that measures the seconds and minutes on different centrally mounted hands, plus 1/10 seconds on the subdial at 2 and hours on the subdial at 10. The dial is very clean, and the bright white polar look is nice. The fixed bezel is also a tachymeter scale, which has not lost any paint. Both case and bracelet only have light storage marks, and the sapphire crystal is perfect. The inner boxes are a little tatty, which seems to be a thing for Swiss brands in the 90’s and into the new decade. For a larger watch, this Sportwave is quite comfortable on the wrist, mainly due to the unique bracelet.
