HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
While we can’t date Ebel watches by their serial numbers, we do have other ways to tell when this was made. This 1911 case style was launched in 1992, and the dials had roman numerals all the way round. In 1999 they switched to Roman numerals at 12, 6 and 9, and in 2002 they switched to arabic numbers. So this watch must have been made between 1999 and 2002.
CONDITION
Some people underestimate Ebel watches, but when you see the prices when new they may need some explaining. For example, the 1911 could cost up to $6,750 in 2001 (gold case, automatic movement, leather strap model). One thing that is undoubted quality is the movement, badged in this the Ebel 187-1 and the only other company that use this calibre is Cartier (688 in their watches). We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. Ebel bracelets are also high quality and a distinct design in most cases – this is actually one of the more conservative designs, but each link has five parts and the removeable links are screwed not pinned. The dial is perfect, and the lume on the hands provides a strong contrast to make telling the time easy. The bezel has light scratches near the sapphire crystal, but the crystal itself is fine. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. If you check the price of a Cartier watch with the comparable movement it is more than double the Ebel, making these somewhat of a bargain.
