A ladies Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 watch, that has the art deco styling of their 1945 watches but with the convenience of modern technology. Model reference 2591.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Girard-Perregaux launched the Vintage 1945 range in 1999 (originally called Vintage 1999), and the serial number on the case back of this watch (778) is quite low in the production run. So we can date this watch to being made circa 1999. 1999 was also the year both the Cartier Basculante and the Patek Philippe Twenty-4 were launched, so it was a good year for quality rectangular watches.
CONDITION
Girard-Perregaux have a great history, going back to 1791, so it is not surprising that they launched a modern watch that recalls some of their successes from the past. The Vintage 1945 range does this perfectly, and is still available today but only as men’s watches. This one has their quartz movement (Girard-Perregaux were the first Swiss manufacturer to produce a quartz watch in 1971, so this is in keeping with the brand). The price in 1999 would have been $3,495, which equates to over £3,700 in today’s money when you allow for inflation.
This example is in good shape and the solid stainless steel bracelet is quite long. This bracelet can be reduced using the screw in links, or the watch could be worn on a leather band. There are light wear marks over the case and bracelet, which are to be expected, but no real damage. The sapphire crystal is not scratched. The dial is very clean, and has nice little red details that you don’t see at first. The watch will be fitted with a new battery before being sent out.
