The Corum Romvlvs is a classic model that was first launched in 1966, showing the numbers on the bezel rather than on the dial. Model reference 50.701.56CL.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Whilst we don’t have the papers for this watch we do have the same model reference shown in the 1999 Wristwatch Annual. We have seen another with papers dated for 2000, so we can be confident that this watch was also made around the same time. The reference doesn’t appear in the 2001 annual
CONDITION
Romvlvs, or Romulus, was the founder and first king of Rome, and the watch was likely named after him due to the innovative design of using Roman numerals on the bezel rather than the dial. This frees the dial to make the watch look uncluttered, and as the numerals are deeply engraved into the 18k yellow gold case they do look rather good in different lights. In 1976 these numerals stopped being enamelled and instead were hand carved, and we wonder if the bezel on this was also carved by an artisan too – there are very slight imperfections that add charm. This model was available in three sizes – 28mm, 32mm and the largest 35mm case is the one we have here. You could also get an automatic version, but the one we have here is a set and forget quartz, using an ETA 210.001 movement. This allows for a very slim case, and at under 5mm it qualifies as an ultra thin watch. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The glass is sapphire crystal, and is chip and scratch free. The slim case has nice ribbing around the sides, and is unpolished. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. The original Corum buckle, in 18k gold, has been transferred to the new strap.
The closest new watch to this would be the The Corum Coin watch in their Heritage collection, but that is over ten times the price of this watch. The only new Romvlvs models are not really comparable as they are bejeweled tourbillons, and cost in excess of £400,000!

From 1st September 2021 we will be planting a tree for every watch we sell, working with the International Tree Foundation (Est 1922) to make this business positive on carbon. By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
