This men’s Zenith Port Royal is from the fifth incarnation of this long running product line, and is model reference 01.0250.887
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
While we greatly admire Zenith watches, they can be difficult to date. We know from the Manfred Rossler Zenith book that the Port Royal V was produced between 1994 and 1999. and we have an interview from 1998 with the MD of Zenith UK stating the automatic Port Royal V was about to launched, but the quartz was already available. We have also seen watches with stamped guarantee papers from between 1995 and 2001, so we are estimating 1997 as a likely year of production for this particular watch. LMVH bought Zenith in 1999.
CONDITION
This Port Royal V is in good condition. There are a few small marks on the case, which are hard to see with the naked eye, and the bracelet also has small scuff marks but you should expect these on an unpolished 20+ year old watch. The movement is an ETA 15 jewel, branded Zenith 877 is working perfectly. One screw is missing from the case back, which we are trying to replace. The syringe hands are lumed, as are the quarter hour pips on the art deco inspired dial. The aftermarket bracelet is very long, so much so that the photos and video show the watch with two links removed (they can be refitted if required, and will come with the watch). This watch has conventional lugs and could be worn on a 20 mm leather strap too, which would totally change the look of the watch. The curved sapphire crystal is perfect. This Port Royal comes in a Zenith small cardboard box, possibly from a battery repair rather than the one when the watch was new.
