With a titanium case, sapphire crystal and a bright yellow dial this Revue Thommen Airspeed stands out from the crowd. Model reference 8516002.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We have found a magazine article showing the black dial version of this Airspeed watch being given as a prize to the three winners of the Swiss Alps Challenge race in 1996. We also found reference to the automatic version, and the ladies versions, but couldn’t find the yellow dial one documented anywhere. With quite an early serial number, we are going to suggest this watch was made circa 1996.
CONDITION
This is a nicer quality watch than you may think. For a start, it uses a titanium case – titanium is stronger and lighter than steel, but also hard to machine and produce. We presume the Airspeed name pushed the designer to make the watch lightweight. You also get a sapphire crystal, which wasn’t as common in the 1990’s as you might expect. Each of the hands are lumed with tritium- even the chrono hands – which again is unusual. The unidirectional bezel clicks really positively, and despite being ‘just’ 100m water resistant the crown is a screw down one. The case back is nicely embossed too. The movement is the same one used by brands like TAG Heuer and Breitling, the 27 jewel ETA quartz chronograph with independent hour hand and quick set date. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The fabric strap is lightly used, but it matched the dial so well we have kept it on. It could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
