HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This Phidias range ran from 1989 to 1996. Judging from the low serial number and others for sale we think this watch was made circa 1991.
CONDITION
The Phidias was a case of bad timing on Vacheron Constantin’s behalf. As companies like IWC and Breitling were driving the fashion to larger watches with more sporty characteristics like divers and chronographs, Vacheron Constantin launched a slim, small two handed watch. The Phidias is certainly not rugged, and as such the market largely ignored the model. Vacheron themselves recognised this by launching the Overseas as this models replacement. However, that means the Phidias is a bit of a bargain. Where you would need £2,000 more to get a quartz Overseas in steel, this Phidias has 18k gold bezel and bracelet centres, an automatic movement and is the rarer watch. Inside the case is the in house calibre 1130, with nineteen jewels and was adjusted to five positions. It is running well and has quick set date too. The dial is very lightly decorated, not immediately noticeable but there, and it is also marked with the sigma symbol (σ), indicating that all the materials used are the highest quality – if it looks gold it is gold. This watch has a shortened bracelet, so will suit a smaller wrist. We have shown it on a man’s wrist (with the clasp not shut), and a ladies wrist as 33mm could be worn by anyone. We do currently have a smaller ladies version of the same model too.
