HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The first TAG Heuer F1 chronograph watches were launched in 1989, but they had a Ronda movement with date pointer at 6. In 1991 this was switched to an ETA movement, with the 1/10th second dial and date window at 4 like this watch. In 1992 the model designation stamped on the case back switched to CA1211. In 1995 the dial changed slightly, and the 1/10TH wording was dropped. So this watch had to be produced between 1992 and 1995, and the production date stamp on the movement says that was made in 1993, tying all the evidence together nicely.
CONDITION
It is easy to see why this model is the favourite F1 Chronograph of the guys at Calibre 11. If you want the classic looks of the first generation F1, but the size is just too small, then this answers that problem. You also gain sapphire crystal over plain glass, and of course the stopwatch facility. It is quite an advanced movement, offering 1/10th seconds and up to 12 hours of timing. You also have quick set date too, and this movement was also used in the range topping S/EL range too. Cosmetically the hands have dirty lume, and the bezel is slightly faded, but as these bezels are made of quite a soft plastic this one isn’t bad at all. The dial is good, and the signed crown screws down correctly – this watch was originally water resistant to an impressive 200M. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath, and it still has the wetsuit extention and the safety fliplock fitted. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
