Also known as a Jenny (pronounced Yenny) Caribbean, this Philip Watch 5000 is a very good quality divers watch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Philip watches can trace their history back to 1858 (they used to be called Philippe, but did a deal with Patek Philippe to change their name slightly.) While we don’t have any paperwork for this watch, we have found two similar watches that had papers and one was for 1991, and the other for 1992. The latter had the same dial colour, so we believe this was made circa 1992.
CONDITION
Jenny made serious dive watches and also provided Aquastar and Squale with their patented waterproof case designs as well as Philip Watch. The earliest Caribbean models were 700m rated, then 1000m at a time when a Rolex Submariner was rated at 200m. One way they did this was with a uniblock case, so the movement comes out via the front- this means the case has one less joint to leak. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The crown is screw down, and signed with the Jenny fish logo that also appears on the case back alongside all the Brevet (patent) numbers. The case is large, but with hidden lugs giving good symmetry and an excellent 60 click unidirectional bezel it doesn’t feel too large. The dial is good, but the lume in the hands is a little dirty. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred (or a rubber strap if you want the authentic divers look.)
