Diego Maradona was so beloved at Napoli during his career there that they bought out commemorative watches for him.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Maradona signed for Napoli in 1984, and left in disgrace in 1992 after several years of drug addiction. His peak, and when he was clearly the world’s best player, was undoubted the late eighties, and guiding Argentina to a World Cup Final in 1990. It is likely that this watch was made around this time.
The watch is in perfect condition, all bar the small tool marks on the case back where the battery has been changed. It still have the hangtag, original strap and buckle and sticker on the case back. There were various different models, and like Maradona none of them were very conventional. This example uses revolving discs rather than hands to tell the time, and the twelve sided bezel has hooded lugs at the top and regular lugs at the bottom. The price of £249 is still on the hangtag, and this would explain why the watch is new old stock – Maradona was less popular in England than Italy or Argentina, following the ‘hand of God’ goal in the 1986 World Cup against England (Fair play, he also scored what is often described as the best goal in World Cup history in that game too.) Inside the watch is a seven jewel Swiss quartz movement, and we will fit a new battery before this is sent out to the new owner.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
